Sprite Sheet Packing: MaxRects Algorithms, Texture Atlases & Memory Optimization

Loading individual image files over HTTP stalls network pipelines and forces constant GPU texture swaps during rendering. A texture atlas combines hundreds of individual character sprites and UI elements into a single large image map accompanied by a JSON coordinate dictionary.

1. The MaxRects Bin Packing Heuristic

The MaxRects (Maximal Rectangles) algorithm packs arbitrary rectangular shapes into a container of fixed dimensions by subdividing free space into maximal overlapping rectangles and selecting placements that minimize wasted surface area (BSSF - Best Short Side Fit).
